PROGRAMMING NOTE from the Author and Archivist

So obviously I just stopped blogging on this platform. I'll get back to it eventually. Or not. I'm taking a break from all social media. It seemed necessary for my mental health.

The last few years have been busy and … challenging:

- 2015 Happened.
- 2016 Let's call it The Lost Year. (Obviously words failed me.)
- 2017 about broke me. Literally. Mentally.
- 2018 was ridiculous, proving 2017 was just a warm up. (Good thing I was already broken so it couldn't hurt as much.#2018TrashCanFire I thought things were going okay, but maybe not?)

- 2019 was such a blur. I know there were highlights, but then stuff happened and carried into the next year...

- And then in March#2020 really took a turn. Who can even categorize 2020? Do we dare?

I kinda want a do-over of some of the last few years. But life doesn’t work that way.

So for now, I'm hunkering down. Regrouping. Trying to stay safe and sort some stuff out.

Stay safe everyone. Stay well.

Photos of the Day: Fragile Hope

First REAL signs of spring: Friday morning at work.
SNOWDROPS!
Granted, it was about 70 degrees. In February. IN NEW YORK!

Photo of the Day: Spot the Color

These daisies: "Never give up! Never surrender!" "We don't care if it's December. We are going to brighten up this flower bed, even if everything else has died!" "Oh hey! Did you notice over here in the corner?"

Me: "Yes, I did!"

Moral of the story: Spot the little things. And share them.

You: "THANK YOU!"

Stop and smell the peonies

The peonies are finally in bloom again. Why is their season so fleeting?

Forget the roses. Stop and smell the peonies.

Magnolia Snowfall

I was heading up the stairs at the office, when this vision came into my view.

Colors!
No grey!
Not monochromatic!

I think ... can it be ... Spring?
Look at this lovely bed of pretty pretty petals!

Screw the allergies! I stuck my nose deep into these and inhaled, deeply.*
I wish this was smell-o-vision!
I can't even describe it.
Nostalgia for North Carolina is one of those feelings that is triggered by magnolias.

Pretty as a picture -- wait, it is!

I should have set up a blanket and just laid back and spent the rest of the week watching the petals rain down on me.

Magnolia bloom season is so fleeting. Laying in this "snow-fall" and piles of "flakes" would have totally been worth the time-out.

* achoooo!
My eyes!
They burn!

Dang green tree haze!

May Flowers

Spring has finally sprung:

We finally have pink petals raining down through star-burst morning suns.

We can make our sun salutations through magnolia blossoms.

These are the only snowing trees that we like.

If you don't have time to be outside, bring the cherry blossoms and blooms inside to you.

I think we're finally cautiously optimistic that it's not going to snow again.

Unfortunately, the spring breezes are spreading the misery of the green haze.

Achoo.

Signs of Spring?

With apologies to The Sound of Music:

Raindrops on snowdrops and whistles of song birds.

These are a few of my favorite things.

Despite the almost every other day snow-storms, Mother Nature is trying ....

What Season is This Anyway?

Taken on the last day of September.

The zucchini plant still has blossoms on it and the morning glories have finally burst into full bloom this week.

These are strange seasons indeed.

Farewell to Flora: Flowers for Flora

Frumpa did a great job of taking lots of pictures. Here are some of the floral tributes to his Aunt Flora.

left: the spray for Aunt Flora from Grumpa, Aunt Jerry, Aunt Cora and their extended families
right: the casket spray, carefully cropped for those of you who are squeamish

Sprays from Flora's family and the grandchildren

Pallbearers were Flora's grandsons
who then placed their boutonnieres on the casket
 in tribute to their Grandma.
Final visits to see floral blankets keeping Flora covered
while other family members: husband, father, uncle, brother, sister, aunt, and cousins
also received tributes from ones who miss them.

Poem of the Day: Surviving Winter

Surviving Winter
It was a dandelion March
Guiltless as a new born child
Boundless as the infinite sky
Yet unfathomnable as the wild;
It was a buttercup April
With depths sweeping and wide
With many a naked flower
Having no need to hide;
It was a daffodil May
As planters come - as planters go
It was pure Springtime
In a brilliantly lit show;
It was the Vic in Victory
The overcoming of the frost
The marrying of a new season
With no seedlings lost.

"The overcoming of the frost"

That's the mode we are in right now ..
Trying to overcome and wait for the buttercup April and the daffodil May.

Photos of the Day: Last September "Summer" Sunday

Sunday, September 29, 2013
Bee-autiful Sunday afternoon at the New York Botanical Garden with Christine.
Absolutely buzzing with activity as summer hangs on with all her might. Time flies.

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.

~ To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time (Gather ye rosebuds)

Photos of the Day: Beauty in the Details

Sinister Beauty

And can be the most wonderful word in the English language -
if it connects two who loved, and were loved. It's all how it's framed.

When all that loved you have also passed on, Mother Nature will provide Her own floral tributes at your grave.
