PROGRAMMING NOTE from the Author and Archivist

So obviously I just stopped blogging on this platform. I'll get back to it eventually. Or not. I'm taking a break from all social media. It seemed necessary for my mental health.

The last few years have been busy and … challenging:

- 2015 Happened.
- 2016 Let's call it The Lost Year. (Obviously words failed me.)
- 2017 about broke me. Literally. Mentally.
- 2018 was ridiculous, proving 2017 was just a warm up. (Good thing I was already broken so it couldn't hurt as much.#2018TrashCanFire I thought things were going okay, but maybe not?)

- 2019 was such a blur. I know there were highlights, but then stuff happened and carried into the next year...

- And then in March#2020 really took a turn. Who can even categorize 2020? Do we dare?

I kinda want a do-over of some of the last few years. But life doesn’t work that way.

So for now, I'm hunkering down. Regrouping. Trying to stay safe and sort some stuff out.

Stay safe everyone. Stay well.

Happy Father's Day 2014!

Possibly the only one looking good here was Dad - despite Jed's smirk.
Ah, the 1980s. What can I say?

Except ...

APPY
ATHERS

Or,

Happy Father's Day!

Yes, you! Stop goofing off and let me take the picture.*

Grampa Max, Grumpa, or *squeeeal and point*
Grumpa Max with Jed's boys ... Drew and Cannon
 Grumpa, Jed, and Cannon

There, apparently, is a love of plaid that transcends generations ...

Up at J's: all the boys, in descending order: Grumpa, Jed, J, and Nathan
and ghosts of generations past and future.**

The use of elbows to defend food also transcends the generations through the male line***.

Grumpa and Nathan

Hope you got some peace and quiet today so you could get lost in a good book.

*But you wonder where WE got it from?
I mean, HELLO!?

** Can you see them? There were a LOT of relatives ghosting about in the house that day. Possibly even Malcolm.

Who is Malcolm? "Malcolm" is the name I have assigned to my potentially new nephew. It might be a girl, you say? But if there's a Nathan, there has to be a Malcolm - so Nathan Fillion/Malcolm Reynolds can have full honor in the family. If it's a girl, and J & Christina are working off the A,E, I, O, U naming guide ... Inara? Um... I'm getting out of this conversation, post haste. Not my call. NOPE. So until then ... Malcolm Monkey *I* think it is. 2 boys. 2 girls. The end. We shall see by the end of the year. Stay tuned.

***Please note: Yes, Grumpa Max loves his granddaughters too. Amber, Elle, and Sarah are loved, as I am and my sisters-in-law -- but I don't have group photos of them from the December 2013/January 2014 and February 2014 trips. OKAY!? Man. Such pressure. And people wonder why I stop blogging from time to time. This shouldn't take an hour for a loving honoring post.

Happy Father's/Fathers' Day 2013!

I was flipping through all my pictures trying to find the right ones to post and discovered that I needed to expand my original thoughts about this -- to include celebrating my brothers and them acting as fathers too.

I mean, we have a great dad. The Greatest.

Even now, when we are finally all out of the Ye Old Connecticut House, (finally, even after one last trip in October 2012),
we still manage to creep back into the Western White House to catch him hiding out in the li-berry/'puter room/den-thingy.
You try to creep up on him with a camera -- and watch out for the remote smack-down.
He gets you out of your comfort zone and trying new things -- like hiking in the wilderness, and learning how to defend yourself and work on your aim.

But the grandkids have an even greater Grumpa.

He's passing on his love of the water to another generation. That's Drew out on Sand Hollow this past week with him, learning the ways of the water and paddle.
And he's a hands-on grandpa to Cannon and Sarah, teaching them important things, like rolling over and smiling for other people - occasionally.

I'm so glad I got to travel so much for all the family get-togethers this past year. But I was more glad to document the generations of my family in happy times.

Like when Uncle J finally met his newest niece and nephew back in January. Proud Papa Max/Jed/Jr. (r) want to know if J thinks "dos bebes"  happen to look like him. Regardless, Sarah wasn't impressed. (She still isn't, almost six months later.)
Then there was the double ceremony afternoon on January 26, 2013: Drew's baptism and confirmation, followed by the twins' blessings.

I love this candid on the left. That's Grumpa, his son Max/Jed/Jr. holding Cannon, all looking down at Drew. (Cameo by the biggest big brother of all, totally unintentional.)

On the right, two dads maybe relievedly thinking that they are glad that they didn't have "dos bebes" at the same time! (Also, nope - NO family resemblance at all ... noooooooooo.)
Despite being dads themselves, brothers can't help being brothers when sisters are pointing cameras at them.
Despite being an annoying older sister, I can still give props where props are due to pops.

No only can he scale tall buildings, I mean decorate with a staple gun, but Max/Jed/Jr. can feed two babies at the same time!
Not only can he dole out snark, medical jargon, and discipline where it's merited, he also can hand out hugs. One day Drew will look back and appreciate all that time he had with his dad growing up, before the twins, before school, and remember the trips they took, as well as the love of the Red Sox and UCONN that came from his father.
I think a lot of J's joshing of his older brother that weekend was because now Max/Jed/Jr. has three himself, so he'll learn what that's all about. It's not just the numbers, you can't do 1 adult : 1 kid anymore, but it's learning how to juggle different kids' ages/interests vs.one-on-one time.

Storytime is a good place to start. Teaching kids about quiet reading time, but also
having that one little thing with that one kid. Nathan has solo Poppa time -- and they are both the more awesome for it. There are also birthday trips to Wendy's, which make for cute photos and videos.
J's also great about introducing them to new activities, like kayaking, sledding, and boarding. Teaching them to be adventuresome. For my part, I can't wait to see how they learn to be simultaneously goofy, geeky, techy, and media savvy, and secure in being multidimensional.

So on this Father's Day - I salute all three of the main fathers in my life.
I love you bros.

But I love my Daddy the bestest!
(and I have embarrassing photos to prove it.)

Happy Father's Day 2012

Painting by Auntie Nettie c. 3rd Grade 1980-1981

Even though the dad in this drawing is not the blonde/silver haired kayaking fox that's my pop, I couldn't think of a better picture to post for Father's Day.

Thanks for instilling a love of the water in all your kids.

Hope you can get out on the lake soon.

xo,

Happy Father's Day!

This is the elusive character that I call my Dad -- in one of the last photos I have of him on the back porch of my childhood home, before he and Mom moved West.

It's actually representative of him on many levels: goofy, and yet caring - keeping an eye out, making you feel welcome, even when you are leaving.
If you are a social gathering, and can't find him - check the kitchen or the office. Behinds the Scenes Man is probably cleaning up, battening down the hatches, or puttering about.Occasionally he moonlights as Khaki Man, hider from the sun, defender of the innocent, securer of the snacks. Decked out in khaki from head to toe, he's ready to stay cool, no matter the emergency. His costume may blend in, but watch out for the sly wit. That can be oh, so colorful.
Alternate guises include Church Man - a quiet force for good who insures proper procedures, building security, and leads by example. He set the bar so high, no one I've ever worked for, or with, has ever really measured up to those standards.
It's my Dad to whom I owe my love of photography, even if I insist on shooting vertically when he likes horizontal framing. Camera Man is game for a random drive through the landscape to chase the light after a storm, hoping to see what ever it is that Mother Nature chooses to reveal and Lady Luck happens to capture.
It was Dad who taught me to drive. Sadly, my driving record should not reflect on his teaching methods. He's an excellent Teacher Man. You will note though that this is a picture of him driving, not me. I rarely get to drive when I'm around the parental units. I think they are scared I may end up hurting them ... more.
His most recent guise is as Grumpa Max - passing the torch as Dad, Poppa, Pops, and Father Man onto another generation. To see him be the grandpa with the little ones is so fun.
Not only is he good for games, tickles, and snuggles, but he can be an excellent confidant and secret keeper. Having survived the trial by fire of an emotional teen-aged daughter, and two very different sons, he learned a variety of communications techniques. He's more than ready to deal with the variety of personalities of his four distinctly unique grandchildren.
Happy Father's Day!
I love you lots and lots.

xo Auntie Nettie

P.S. The car is fine!
Well, it would be, if I had one.
