PROGRAMMING NOTE from the Author and Archivist

So obviously I just stopped blogging on this platform. I'll get back to it eventually. Or not. I'm taking a break from all social media. It seemed necessary for my mental health.

The last few years have been busy and … challenging:

- 2015 Happened.
- 2016 Let's call it The Lost Year. (Obviously words failed me.)
- 2017 about broke me. Literally. Mentally.
- 2018 was ridiculous, proving 2017 was just a warm up. (Good thing I was already broken so it couldn't hurt as much.#2018TrashCanFire I thought things were going okay, but maybe not?)

- 2019 was such a blur. I know there were highlights, but then stuff happened and carried into the next year...

- And then in March#2020 really took a turn. Who can even categorize 2020? Do we dare?

I kinda want a do-over of some of the last few years. But life doesn’t work that way.

So for now, I'm hunkering down. Regrouping. Trying to stay safe and sort some stuff out.

Stay safe everyone. Stay well.

40 Diamonds for 40: Winding Down Memory Lane with Wendy

Besides my friend Jenn, "brother" Dan, and my relatives, one of the other people that I've known for the longest amount of time is my friend Wendy. Wendy and her youngest child Ms. Emily have been featured on this blog before, when they've visited NY and I've gone back up to CT.

It's a wonderful thing to have friendships that have survived the test of time, teens, tempestuous relationships, and have transcended periods of time with little to no communications. It's a scarey thing, however, when they have the photographic documentation and/or other evidence of the past that might, or might not, be incriminating. Being "preacher's kids" means that what might not seem incriminating to others is almost scandalous for us. Also, being "mature" examples to the next generation means that only we can know the details of our deep "dark" secrets.

From church halls, church grounds when we played "hookey" from classes, church dances, church camps, to being attendant at her first wedding (my first time as maid of horror/honor), to phone calls from Connecticut and Utah to discuss parents, siblings, and/or the "current state of affairs", and now New York visits with and without kids and spouses -- it doesn't seem like it's been almost 30 years.

Perhaps now, with pictures* and dates, Ms. Emily will FINALLY get that her crazy mom and I have actually know each other since before we were her age.

Thanks Ms. Wend. See you in NYC soon. We'll "tawlk!"
Flashback to 1986

Having dads of authority at church tends to draw kids together. It also makes you wish that maybe you aren’t such a goody-two-shoes in the eyes of the rest of the kids. Unfortunately what I can find for photos doesn’t help our case.

This is July 4th 1986 at a church picnic with our families. Nope, no trouble here.

How about girls camp that same year? Yet again just some good friends hanging out. I am glad we always had each other.

Now in the process of looking for photos my kids have discovered two things. I couldn’t spell back then and maybe I should be reported to hoarders for the odd things I have saved over the years. But I think I must have just known back then I would need something corny for this particular reason.

Yes, going to the mall and out for pizza was a big deal for me because if it didn’t have to do with school or church we didn’t really go anywhere. To me, Auntie Nettie, you were hip and happening since you would go off to New York City and other adventures.
Flashforward to 2011-201?:

*It was the 1980s. Be nice. Also, apparently my new 'do isn't as radical as I thought. What's old is new again.

Photo of the Day: Summer Camp

Emily's Reasons to go to summer camp

I don't know if I could hack the cold showers all summer,
or the lack of electricity, and
What's with the fish?!

Retroblog September 3, 1985

Today is September 3, 1985 Time 10:30

Hi! Boy it's been along time since I last wrote! 2 years in fact. But I've written in my diary. I'm going to write about something that happened to me almost a month ago. It was on August 14, 15, 16, and 17. For almost a year the Young Women had been paying monthly installments for a General Young Women's symposium for Girls 12- ____ from Connecticut, New York, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont and New Hampshire. It cost $195. The girls who went from our ward were me, Luci, Pam, Mom, Sister Luty, Eva, Vicki, Lisa, Debbie and Lea. Sister Starko went too. On the first nite while we had the bar-b-que I looked around and thought WOW are there a LOT of girls here!

(CON)

that night during the skits Sister Kapp and Sister Ramsas from the General Young Women Board showed up they sat a row behind me. Up to the skit it hadn't hit me that I was actually at the conference But when we all got on the stage and did our things it hit me. The next day when I was in the talent show and I saw the girls from the other stakes it was great we all got close and made friends. When all the girls got to gether and sang the Rianbow Connection. It was GREAT. That nite when we went swimming it seemed as all the girls were wimming. It the Water Carnival the next nite all the girls

(CON)

our ward and stake became closer tring. We got third place! Before we left all the Ashford girls - Mom, Sister Starko, and Sister Luty all bore our testimonies. A very moving experience. As we went home we stopped at a mall - It seemed to me like coming out of a dream into a nightmare - There was porno all over the place YUK!

The best part of the whole thing was listening to Sis. Kapp talk!

Hope we have another!

Although I will still be posting retroblog entries from this volume, this is the last real entry in this journal.

It alludes to the fact that I must have been keeping some entries in another diary, but I know those have been destroyed.

Two years shows some definite improvements in the handwriting, spelling, and ability to write down more details, so it's a shame I didn't keep it up the journal.

The girls and ladies from my congregation have scattered over time. Sister Starko moved away and we still occassionally exchange holiday cards. Sister Luty, a major influence on my musical career, passed away a few years ago, and I know she's keeping that choir of angels hopping up in heaven. Everytime I hear a congregation singing hymns on Sunday MUCH too slowly, or see a kid running through the halls at a church, I think of Sister Luty.

I went through most of my teen church years with Eva and Vicki. The stories they could tell about me, and I pray they don't! Loose the photos ladies, please. (Girls, if you are reading this, forgive me for being so bad at being in touch. Many many congrats Vicki and Gary on your lovely addition! She's beautiful!)

Retroblog August 21, 1983

Today is Sun. Aug. 21, 1983 Time 4:14 p.m

This week was o.k. We went to the beach Tuesday and fun. Mom got pooped and girls camp. Tomorrow I might get to go to Sturbiges Village with Merrie Miss from Norwich If dad says yes. Mom already did.

So maybe Mom didn't have such a relaxing time at girls camp after all?

In this entry we have references to more church-related social activities with the most local congregations, the one located in Norwich, CT. Girls camp was usually attended by leaders and youth from all the congregations in the region, so Mom probably made these arrangements for me at camp. Another way to get one of the kids, at least, out of the house, so she could recuperate from camp. (We also have a reference to the classic child/parent divide&conquer/play-on-off-the-other technique.)

My brothers and I have fond memories of going up to Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. Another perennial day-trip excursion for the family and a standard school trip for most New Englanders, we all remember running around, seeing the animals, going to the general store to buy penny candy, watching the blacksmith, and getting freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. While most of the Village was trying to be historically accurate, I don't think Nestle Tollhouse's chocolate chip cookie recipe had been invented yet. Who cares? Which ever marketing person okayed this was brilliant!

Retroblog August 14, 1983

Today is August 14, 1983 Time 7:18 p.m

This week I got to see Snow White and the 7 dwarfs. It was funny. Friday we were going to go to the beach but it rained so we stayed home and had fun. Tomorrow afternoon Mom is going to girl's camp. And won't be home for a week. Yuk, a whole week with Dad.

I had to go and look it up, (the Internet is good for those kinds of things), but back in the day aka 1983, Disney did re-release Snow White to the movie theaters. This was way back before VHS (don't ask kids) or even DVDs. With cabin fever setting in and not so much a.c., the parents must have thought this was heaven-sent. Take the kids to a movie. Cool 'em off, entertain them, and get out of the house. YIPPEE. Hi ho, hi ho. Off to Jilson we go.

At this age I was still too young to go to girl's camp. Even though she probably had to deal with bugs and even more annoying girls, at least Mom got out of the house. Poor Dad. That means he had to put up with US for a whole week! I wonder what hijinks we tried to pull on him. The excuse of "Mom lets us do it" wouldn't have flown with him. It was a novelty for us, and a trial for him. Don't let the "Yuk" fool you. A whole week with Dad was, and still, is a treat.
